SEO for Plumbers

Plumbing has the shortest decision window of any trade. Most enquiries are emergencies, and the business that appears first and answers the phone usually wins.

Why plumbing search is different

Plumbing search is dominated by emergency intent. Someone with a burst pipe or no hot water searches on a phone, taps the first or second Map Pack result, and calls. There is no comparison shopping and no second session.

This makes three things decisive: appearing in the top three Map Pack results, having a phone number that is one tap away on mobile, and answering that phone. A plumber ranking fourth effectively does not exist for emergency searches, because the searcher never scrolls that far.

What actually moves plumbing rankings

Proximity is the constraint you cannot change — but service-area configuration and location pages let you compete in nearby towns you would otherwise be invisible in.

Emergency-intent pages. "Emergency plumber [town]", "burst pipe repair [town]", "boiler not working [town]". These are separate queries from "plumber [town]" and convert far better, because the searcher needs someone now.

Mobile page speed. Emergency searches are almost entirely mobile, often on poor connections. A site taking four seconds to load loses the call to one taking one second, regardless of who ranks higher.

Reviews mentioning speed. Reviews that reference fast response carry disproportionate weight for emergency work. Asking customers to mention response time in a review is a small change with real effect.

Credentials and trust signals

Plumbing is a trade where credentials materially affect conversion. Gas Safe registration in the UK, or the equivalent licensing in other markets, should appear on the website, the Google Business Profile and in schema markup — not buried on an about page.

This matters for AI search specifically. When someone asks an assistant for a plumber, the model weighs whether a business is verifiably qualified. A registration number stated plainly in structured data is machine-readable evidence; a logo image is not.

Realistic timeline for a plumbing business

Google Business Profile work shows in two to four weeks. Emergency-intent pages typically rank within six to eight weeks because competition on those specific phrases is lower than on the head term. Meaningful call volume usually arrives by month three.

Plumbing benefits from faster results than most trades, because emergency query variations are numerous and individually less contested than the main "plumber [town]" phrase most competitors chase.

Plumbing — Frequently Asked Questions

The highest-return channel for most plumbers is the Google Map Pack, because emergency searchers tap one of the top three results without scrolling. That means a complete Google Business Profile, consistent business details across directories, recent reviews, and a fast mobile site with emergency-intent pages for each area served. Google Ads works for immediate volume; lead networks work but cost the most per job won.

Local SEO for a single-location plumbing business typically starts around £600 per month in the UK. Multi-town coverage costs more because each area needs its own page and citation work. Weigh that against current lead network spend — many plumbers are already paying more per month for shared leads.

The usual causes are an unverified Google Business Profile, an incorrect primary category, business details that differ between your website and directory listings, too few recent reviews, or a service area configured incorrectly. Distance from the searcher also matters and cannot be changed, which is why businesses outside a town centre need location pages to compete there.

They are not mutually exclusive, but they behave differently. Checkatrade and similar platforms deliver enquiries immediately, shared with competitors, at a cost per job that rises as more plumbers join your area. SEO takes two to three months to produce volume, costs the same regardless of how many enquiries it generates, and the visibility remains yours. The common pattern is running both and tapering the platform spend as organic volume becomes predictable.
