The short answer
SEO gets you ranked. AEO gets you named.
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) aims to place your website high in the list of results on Google or Bing, so a person clicks through. AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) aims to have your business mentioned inside the answer an AI assistant writes, so a person hears your name as a recommendation.
They share technical foundations and are usually run together. The main practical difference is that SEO content is written to attract clicks, while AEO content is written to be quoted.
Side by side
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in the results list | Be named inside the answer |
| Surface | Google, Bing results pages | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews |
| Content shape | Depth, engagement, keeps you reading | Self-contained passages built for extraction |
| Primary lever | Backlinks and topical authority | Structured data and entity consistency |
| Measured by | Rankings, clicks, impressions | Share of answer, citation frequency |
| Typical timeline | 6–9 months for competitive terms | Weeks for structure, months for citations |
| Competition | Saturated | Largely unclaimed |
| Traffic volume | High | Low volume, high intent |
What they have in common
The overlap is larger than most comparisons admit. Both require a site that is crawlable, fast and technically sound. Both benefit from clear information architecture. Both reward genuine subject expertise over thin content.
Critically, AI assistants disproportionately cite pages that already rank well organically. Retrieval systems tend to pull from top-ranking results, which means strong SEO is close to a prerequisite for AEO rather than an alternative to it.
Anyone selling AEO as a replacement for SEO is selling you something that will not work.
Where they genuinely diverge
Content structure
SEO rewards comprehensive pages that hold attention. AEO rewards passages that can be lifted whole. A 3,000-word guide can rank beautifully and never get cited, because no single paragraph in it stands alone.
The role of structured data
In SEO, schema is a modest enhancement that can earn rich results. In AEO it is foundational — it is how a model knows what your business is without inferring it from prose.
Where the work happens
SEO effort concentrates on your own site plus link acquisition. AEO effort is weighted more heavily toward third-party presence: directories, review platforms, forums and trade press, because those are the sources models retrieve and cite.
Measurement
SEO has mature tooling — Search Console, rank trackers, analytics. AEO measurement is manual and prompt-based, because no assistant publishes a ranking API. Anyone claiming a precise AEO dashboard is approximating.
Which should you invest in first?
If you rank poorly on Google, start with SEO. AI assistants largely cite pages that already rank, so AEO work on an invisible site has little to retrieve.
If you already rank well but are not being named by AI assistants, prioritise AEO. The foundations are in place and the gap is structural — schema, answer-shaped content and third-party consistency.
If you are starting from nothing, run both. They share enough groundwork that doing them together costs considerably less than doing them sequentially.
What does each cost?
UK SEO retainers commonly run from £500 to £5,000 per month depending on competitiveness. AEO programmes typically add £300 to £1,000 per month on top, because much of the technical work is shared with SEO rather than duplicated.
Be wary of anyone quoting AEO as a wholly separate service at full SEO prices. The technical foundations genuinely overlap, and pricing should reflect that.
